The saying, different horses are for different courses, I think rings true, when you are trying to figure out which exercise is right for you.

Let us think about your interests. What sparks you? What type of injuries or restrictions do you currently have? What type of workouts do you have/want to include in your workout regime? Answering each of these questions will help when deciding your “type of exercise”.

Find what is interesting

There are lots to choose from when it comes to different forms of exercise. Take a moment to think about what interests you off the bat? then go try it out. This is a great starting point for discovering what exercise fits and connects with you, and what does not connect with you at all.

Then take a moment to think about, what type of exercise is going to suit your interest. Are you interested in indoor activities? Do you like being comfortable? Do you like being outside where you do not have four walls surrounding you, where you have got open space, to run around, to do your workouts in? These types of considerations can help shape what form of exercise is going to work for you.

Solo or Enlist a friend

Along the lines of interests, think about if you love working by yourself. Does it give you a chance to clear your mind? Possibly you need people around you just to get yourself motivated. You might have to grab a girlfriend and go to the park or get to the gym, to keep your accountable. You know that by having workout with you, she is going to keep you honest. Then it when she is getting low, you are going to do the same thing for her, pushing each other to stick with exercise.

Workout with your current body

Another aspect to consider is how you are currently moving, or what you are currently capable of achieving. There is no point if you have just started working out, to then go jump into an ultra-marathon. This will require a lot of work to get there and your body will not be ready to do this safely. There is a higher probability that you could get injured or inflame current restrictions that you have got already.

By taking the time to assess what you are capable of now, you can find forms of exercise to suit where your body is at the moment. I am not saying that you can’t exercise. Just be aware of your capability and understand how to modify the type of workout or exercise form that you are doing. This can be done with the knowledge you currently have, by pulling back what it hurts, or using a fitness professional to help you guide you along the way.

Strength & Cardio Training

Taking into consideration all these factors. There is going to be at least two things that I believe are important when deciding what your type of exercise. The first; You will need a cardio based workout. The is to get the heart rate up and get your lungs pumping. By doing this it will fill your body full of energy for the rest of the day.

The second to include, is resistance training. Most of us, as we get older, past our twenties, thirties and forties will find our body starting to deteriorate. Our strength also starts to go backwards. By maintaining strength training through workouts, it will help solidify the bone density that you currently have. The other benefits are your joints, your ligaments, your tendons, and your muscles also become stronger. Keep both resistance training and cardio training, inside your exercise regime.

Now armed with all this information, I hope you can make a better decision on what exercise form is going to best suit you.
