2020 to 2021

We arrive to the current time. This is the Today element of our journey. Reside in Movement has remained true to what we do well, Group Outdoor Training. For nearly 10 years out on Ashfield Reserve we have trained over nearly 900 people here. Now we not only operate with Group Outdoor Training, we now incorporate Personal Training 1to1 and  2to1 settings (occasionally small group too). Online workouts in the form of Livestream classes, Text Check in workouts & Messenger video PT sessions have been a way MOVERS continue exercising whilst Face to Face is not an option.

This past year has been wonderful seeing the different branches of our community come together. MOVERS who don’t train at Ashfield Reserve but come out Running when Package Training is on & those who join us for Coffee Club are a part of the community at Reside too.

Trainer Skye’s Charity walks for DEBRA Australia continue throughout the year. Not only is this a way to contribute to one of the Supported Charities, it also gets MOVERS outside, exploring places they have yet to discover & embrace the beauty of Perth’s surrounds.

Much like the walks, Bike Riding & Paddling days were a fun way to spend an afternoon (Trainer Daniel didn’t agree on the ride day!). Living an active life does not mean that attending 3-4 x exercises classes a week. Sure it helps you move in throughout the days, but embracing the surroundings, taking options to create more movement that isn’t a squat, pushups, situps & pressing etc. Seeing faces who had trained or a part of the community at these events is brilliant, it is a reason why we put it out there. Encouraging others to learn to move just as we do!

Speaking of past clients, the SIL Class Reunion was a great night for those who attended. Down at the local Wine Bar, Cork & Bottle. MOVERS and past SIL members came together to see one another, enjoy some beverages & food to swap their lives & continue the connection formed from the park. Possibly another one in the future…..

Heading into the running season…….well that had a little hiccup. Trainer Daniel had to take a hiatus from the park for 3 weeks (yes he was going bonkers sitting still for that long!) Having his appendix out and the wonderful Alex & Skye ran Reside in Movement whilst healing took place. Only recently the running as started back up & we are looking forward to more runs, MTBing, swimming & paddles through the year.

That is our story over the last 10 years! (OMG 10 years!!!)

Thank you so much to our wonderful Trainers who have supported, carried & brought us to where we are with the MOVERS/SIL Members over this time without these wonderful people it wouldn’t have been possible.

Our lovely MOVERS/SIL Members are the reason we have a purpose here in Bassendean. Your ongoing support, training & connection has made this journey such an awesome rollercoaster to ride. Thank you SOOOO MUCH!

2019 to 2020

Reflecting back over the times as Step into Life has been a blast. In the previous year, “Evolving”, from a franchise to a separate entity as Reside in Movement, has had it’s rewarding moments. And while COVID-19 has had a tough & stressful impact on us all in 2020, it allowed for the creation of where we are today. A place where change can continue to reside in how we operate.

Aside from this major shift in our ‘appearance’ the community created on the park continues to thrive & build on itself. Earlier in the year we had hosted a Yoga/Strength workout raising funds for LifeLineWA. A wonderful morning spent with 40+ wonderful people. In this same year Trainer Skye also found a Charity close to her heart and organised a 5km walk raising funds for DEBRA Australia. We have been pleasantly surprised at the interest and participation of these events from the MOVERS community  and we look forward to doing more in the years to come.

Many of you know we love our running, but, like most of 2020, Running packages & Bassendean Run Club had a spanner thrown in the works. After a late start, we were lucky enough to have our run packages still happen, getting to visit MOVERS homes to launch Trail runs from, the Trails in June/July were a blast. Trainer Alex, yes Alex, came out to enjoy some running too!!

Social events & different locations to train like the Xmas party, Trivia night, the Australia Day Beach Workout, Riverside Yoga & the Xmas Eve workouts were such good times with fellow MOVERS. As we know, many come for the training at the start but continue because of the wonderful people we meet from the park. We even had the opportunity to Dine with long time MOVERS who have been training with Bassendean for over 3 years or more!

Outside of the unknown of COVID & the adventure to become our own leaders as Reside in Movement. Tash & Daniel started in a new journey that had already been a well known path to them, parenting. August they welcome their 4th daughter little Violet (& yes the last, NO Netball or Basketball teams here!). It was either Team Blue or Team Pink to guess which gender it was going to be. It seems too many of the Team Pink cookies were eaten. The support of this community with Violet coming in has made the park a place that feels safe & welcoming.

Thank you MOVERS.

2018 to 2019

Our last full year of being in a franchise for us. Continuing to do what we do well, Group Outdoor Training! Another area that has come forward in leaps & bounds is how the friendships are formed at fun social events. Lots of great laughs, good times & friendships kicked off at these events. We shared a great evening out together at the Morley Rollerdome. Kids (both small & Daniel) had a blast getting into a groove of skating. The dress for the occasion was awesome from Skye too 😊

Ten Pin Bowling night was when we saw many partners of members come out to join in on the fun. Scores were important on the night but in the long term forgotten as we all get to cherish the memory of a night out together. Another night was the Winter Dinner at the Bassendean Hotel (local café had fallen through ☹). Getting to spend some meaningful time with people over a meal was fantastic. It was connecting those who normally train in either the AM or the PM, with others from the opposite class times to them. Also it was Ineke’s birthday to celebrate that evening 😊

Wrapping up the year with a brilliant night doing Lawn Bowls. Pizza was on the menu served with laughs & good times with mates on the side. Lawn Bowls have been a great way for us all to mingle, celebrate our hard work of the course of the year & get together before the festive season kicked in place. With many more great Xmas parties still to come, nights like this are create for the happiness quota.

2017 to 2018

It has now been 6 years of seeing many members learn to run & run bigger distances. Nearly every year it had been rewarding being involved in 3 x main run events; Bridges, HBF Run for a Reason & the City to Surf. Each gave people different senses of accomplishment. Watching people’s excitement in the morning, in the middle of the event & most importantly satisfaction at the end was great to be a part of. The rise in popularity of Trail running had started. We even got to jump in with fellow venues to form some great runs in the hills.

From running to walking, to crawling through mud & under barbed wire. Outside of the ‘run’ events there was plenty of good times had with other members getting involved in various events through this year. A local walk that was charity focused for World Vision, Walk for Water. A little loop around Bassendean where members and their kids got involved in it.

The True Grit weekend was really fun to be in the mix of too. Volunteering our time on stations over the 2 days and getting to participate in the event as a reward. Many of the members had a blast (even if Tash & Daniel missed the start time). It was followed up with a camp out to help out the next day. Awesome day out!

Back to the park we had chosen to continue exploring this beautiful space in Bassendean and its spots along the river. We got into “Riverside Yoga”, inspired from a Strech n Flex class at a member’s house earlier in the year. Highlight was the Pontoon class down at Success Hill balancing whilst boats & kayakers paddled past. Our regular Coffee club was growing in attendance & repeating every month at this point. Another great way to connect with fellow members.

Connections were being formed both on the park & off the park. We saw the lovely Troy & Katie introduce their first born to the group. It was touching seeing the membership come together presenting them with a baby warming gift. Off the park we had a Winter Warmer at a local Café who opened especially for us to create a soup night. Awesome way to foster relationships with the ones we see regularly at the park.

Time builds trust & friendships. Throughout 2018 we saw this begin to flourish more & more. From camp out, to dinners, to celebrate with each other in their fitness achievements & personal ones like introducing a baby into the world. Lovely time & wonderful memories created.

2016 to 2017

A year of marking milestones & also some fun times had too. 2017 saw the first Basso Brave (& WA too) member reach the Training Club milestone of 10,000 points. In other words 1,000 training sessions completed. Tony H had come into the Step into Life Bassendean world in 2013 and in a few short years hit the top milestone in Training Club. About 5 months later we saw the wonderful Fiona G reach the same milestone too! Amazing work from both these two members.

Continuing the strength from running we took to the trails, the streets and entered fun runs together. We even started seeing members who had been nervous about participating in events join in. Other events in the year had also popped up. One that comes to mind is the collaboration of Boxkick & SUP paddling, with SUP Tonic Australia. Sharing some weekend mornings getting into some boxing & then into Stand Up Paddle boarding.

A different event we hadn’t been involved with before was a fundraising week/event for the McGrath Foundation for Breast Cancer. All dressed up in pink, a fun morning raising funds to the foundation, celebrating women working out and connecting with local community operators supporting the morning. Err not the greatest look for Trainer Daniel though…..

It may not have been exactly Bassendean but the sister venue of SIL Swan View had reached 10 years providing fitness solutions to the Swan View community. A good milestone to be attained, even had the founder of Swan View join in the celebrations.

The last annual Members Ball for us for a couple of years, was a Las Vegas style event at the Mulberry on the Swan. An entertaining evening with the photobooth again being a fun part of the night as well as the blackjack & poker tables for fellas that evening. Finishing the year up at the Bassendean Bowling club for the Christmas party has been an enjoyable way to bring fellow members together & see the year out of fantastic energy from many.

2015 to 2016

Wohoo we had hit our 5th year in Business. Knowing the statistics of small business failures in the first 5 years of business is 3 out of 4 survive we were really pleased to have achieved this long at the park. Now we had starting building traction with not only the enjoyment of running but also a great sense of community on and off the park.

Hosting our 4th Annual Member Ball, it was a great way to spend an evening in celebration of the efforts members had put into their training. Being close to home, at Steel Blue Oval, had meant there were lots of members who enjoyed this night with one another and took to the dance floor to party. Oh and the photo booth was a smash hit with sooo many members, partners & friends.

It was great seeing the diversity of people exercising down at the park. It began from many ladies in the mid-40’s to young mums with bubs in prams, men & women in the 60’s and even some members who are challenged in social & mental capacity. Watching & growing with the overall membership base to great an inclusive & welcome place to exercise for all had been very rewarding.

Heading towards September we had called in previous Assistant Trainers to a Sunday 5th Birthday park celebration. This morning was great fun seeing current members training with us, former Trainers enjoying the session and then members getting the Trainers to give a “Train the Trainer” workout as a finisher. Again it had been highlighting how our culture has evolved over the years to ensure all who train have a space to feel a part of the group. Wonderful 5 years to this point, thank you.

2014 to 2015

Running! This year is where we saw a lot more running events take place. More members getting involved in distance running & the intro of Trail Running (Daniel’s favourite!). Through the Bridges, City to Surf, King of the Mountain and other Runs lots of memories were shared together. More importantly friendships had really began to flourish from training together at the park. At our core, the community is one of the strongest reasons why we enjoy to continue train people at the park.

Classes at the time we beaming of laughter, fun & excitement with many members now attending lots of times & catching up throughout the week/weekends. There was social events like ‘Step into the Valley’ where members had organised a day out in the Swan Valley checking out the breweries. Photos show good times were made.

This year was also important to Step into Life as a company as it reached the 20th since the founder Larry Cohen started in 1995 in Victoria. A visit from himself to a class as a Trainer was a differing experience & a larger celebration coming 4 SIL venues to the park with the 92.9 road runners bolstering some fun & eyes on the 20th year mark.

Another milestone was the Centenary of landing in Gallipoli 100 years ago. For Trainer Daniel, this was a significant part of his identify that flowed into the Members Ball. A combination of both the Bassendean & the Swan View location we saw 160+ people attend the Perth Town Hall in 1920’s style. A good night (stressful for Tash) had by all, again the pictures say a thousand words about the night.

One last social event on the calendar was the City Scramble a state wide attendance of all the venues to move around Fremantle collecting items, achieving challenges, getting funny pictures to share. Another great time spend with friends from the park.

A year full of friendships that have built to last. A running memories for many.

2013 to 2014

The year we had started to grow our family, both the Amato’s & SIL Training team! We had already had some Trainers like Carly, Craig, Simone & Lance enter training for brief periods of time. This year is where we saw Francesca, Sven & Jess come into play a lot. These guys became friends with many members in this time, making an impact on the vibe at the park. Our middle child Skye entered our world just as we grew our ‘families’. We also grew to include the sister venue of SIL Swan View later in 2014.

Social events had now started becoming a fun way to engage our community. Not only was there great energy on the park but friendships were forming at these catch ups. The Wonderland Ball was magically & the ladies from Irina Astoff Ballet School added to the fun of the night too. So many happy faces & the teapot decorations that were made for the night….awesome. Ah I love looking back on this night & seeing Natasha, stunningly beautiful in that gorgeous dress (thanks Sam!)

On the rise was the interest and participation in running. From the Asics Bridges Fun Run to City to Surf to Teams in the Marathon Relay event, Basso Braves were out in force. (Go the Basso Bears!). 1st time runners were incoming, runners from previous years stepping up their distances to 21 kms and we even had Megan smash her 1st 42.2 km Marathon, wohoo!

Events throughout the year gave the place for Braves to connect with one another, be involved in other ways and even give back. Yep we did our first Blood Drive this year!! Tough Mudder we repeated from previous year but took a bus load of people (yes a school bus full of excited & nervous people to be shocked with electric wires, faces full of mud and power through 19 kms) This was a  great day together. Another team based day was the shift to teams in the City Scramble in the city. Watching Braves and fellow SIL people from venues around Perth get around to different check points, be silly, get sweaty and all whilst dressed in a fun manner was brilliant to watch.

Looking forward to seeing the coming years, awesome year 2013-2014.

2012 to 2013

What a blast of year we had and our little twins, Kayley & Ella were sooooo tiny! (Skye was coming this year too). In these earlier years family was really strong as we connected with many members at the time. We had also grown a large member base this year. This led to the wonderful introduction of trainers. Many remember Francesca & Sven who appeared throughout the year as they began their journey in Fitness Industry. Other trainers, Craig, Lance, Carly, Samith & Simone also came through at this time.

Over the course of the year Fun Runs were now popping up and many members got involved. Heaps of 1st timers to these events, PB’s cracked, pure joy & proud moments to reflect back on. HBF was loads of fun and seeing the Trainers get into spirit with the Buzz & Woody costumes was Mint! Santa Fun Run at the beginning was a laugh & good morning in Freo. Colour Run was a brilliant morning with many of us having a blast with the colours down at Langley Park. It was nice having our family involved in this event too.

Speaking of events, Obstacle Course racing was born this year and Tough Mudder was a hard challenge for us all. Yet it was such a rewarding and team bonding experience for everyone. The electric shocks were a little intense, although it added to the experience. I may be bold and say Trainer Francesca wasn’t a fan of the mud though….hehehe.

And so it began….The beginning of 5 years of Member Balls. We kicked it off with the Masquerade theme Ball with 80 odd members, partners & friends. Tash had organised Dancers to perform filling the Ball Room with fun & excitement. The Camera was a hit with props making it enjoyable. Ohh and have at a look at little Skye who wore a moustache & glasses on the night (wink wink)

Thank you for these memories everyone!

2011 to 2012

Well, weren’t we all younger looking versions of ourselves!! Our first year was crazy fun. So much learning taking place with the beginnings of long term friendships forming. Many people entered our world at this time. There was a buzz around the community with a new fitness provider entering the area. Through the course of 17 months we brought in boxkick, coreball, bands, powerflex & endurit. Introducing to the members at the time a pathway to learn about movement.

During our first year we were also introduced to SiL’s State Mini Olympics. A great day out in the sun, the Mini Olympics resembled a school sports carnival filled with lots of laughter, giggles and some falls by the looks of the photos. It was a great way to spend a Sunday morning out with newfound fitness friends and our families.

We (Tash & Daniel) were excited about marking our 1st year in business and had a nice dinner planned at the Rose & Crown Hotel. Little did Daniel know it was a surprise birthday as his birthday was the day following on the City to Surf. Tash did well to keep it a secret until the Friday where an email was sent out replying to a member at the time and Daniel caught wind of the evening. He acted surprise until the cake. (Nice try Tash!)

We ended the year with our first Christmas party, a family fun day. We had Santa sack races, 3-legged runs, dogs dressed as Santa and kids having a good time. From this point forward social events had become a pillar to the community we now have.
